a walk through my finished sketchbook
While studying art in school, MAN! I had a robust sketchbook practice. A certain professor really encouraged us to rub a page in mud, sew a branch into a page, paint with leftover coffee…. I began approaching the page in a new and experimental way.
When you’re out of school and you have to start paying bills, working, feeding yourself (why is it so hard to make three meals a day for me??) my sketchbook practice sort of disappeared. I’ve always been the kind to continue making notes, keeping a planner, and doodling on anything. But the scraps of receipts and napkins have never been consolidated and who knows where they all are now.
This December I decided I wanted to make it a goal to journal or write and do a drawing every day. I figured if there was day I didn’t have the time or energy, shame didn’t have any space there. This was a devotion, not an obligation. It stemmed from missing the practice and loving expression, not from feeling I “should” do this to be a good artist.
I just filled up my first sketchbook and while I want it to remain mostly private, I thought it’d be special to share with you all <3

here are some daily sketches of one of my roommates, sometimes on evenings where he was playing guitar, playing with his cat, or reading.
